Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such medications need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
