Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
