The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
