Chelsea Boss Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Links as '100%' Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled recent reports linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, addressed the ongoing speculation about his next move.
Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, has a contract that runs until 2029, with a potential extension option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions After Previous Remarks
Maresca's most recent comments follow in the wake of he described a previous 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked considerable speculation of a possible rift between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation publicly, there has equally been no apology offered, leaving the matter unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's press conferences has become notably strained, raising concerns it could undermine what has up to now been a decent beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are fourth in the Premier League, have qualified for the League Cup last four, and can achieve a favourable European draw with good performances in their remaining matches.
