An Forecasting Platform User Made $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.
One account, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Announcement
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However the odds had increased to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.
A small number of other platform users also earned significant sums from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Grows
Elected officials are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Industry Context
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.
The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
