2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined vision.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full message from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”

With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was informative. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our players.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. Following several months of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His management and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to persist observing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.

David

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a public demo. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."

The game has not yet received an announced release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as creation continues.
